Senior equine care
About senior equine care
The demographics of our equine population are changing, with increasing numbers of people keeping more elderly horses, and geriatric equine medicine presents its own challenges.
In many cases, there are underlying disease processes that present subtly and can easily be assumed to be “just old age”.
However, with a careful clinical evaluation, for example at a health check at their annual vaccination, underlying health problems can be detected.
We have many examples of elderly horses being rejuvenated by the successful treatment of underlying health issues. Contact any of the team to chat about your OAP!

Physiotherapy
About physiotherapy
We believe in taking a collaborative approach to horse health and work closely with other complementary therapists.
The purpose of physiotherapy is to restore and maintain mobility, function and performance.
We aim to work closely with physiotherapists as part of a team. This is vital to gaining a long-term positive outcome for your horse.
For example, if we examine a horse with a bad back, we aim to provide a thorough and comprehensive assessment, discuss the case with the horse’s physiotherapist and then provide appropriate treatment to allow a physiotherapist the platform to build the horse’s core strength, greatly improving the long term prognosis for them.

Farriery advice
Farriery advice
We strongly believe in working closely in professional partnership with your farrier.
Our vets have excellent knowledge of remedial farriery, allowing us, alongside your farrier, to find the best solution for your horse.
Our vets attend farriery CPD aimed at vets and farriers regularly, and Alistair has lectured at farriery courses to over 100 vets, farriers and physiotherapists.
Please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

Behaviour
About equine behaviour
There are often underlying clinical problems that can manifest themselves as bad behaviour.
Bucking and rearing may be due to oral, back, gastric or orthopaedic pain. Some hindlimb lamenesses are very subtle, especially if both hind limbs are affected and can result in changes in behaviour (e.g. refusing the occasional jump or resenting ridden work).
Similarly, there are various modern approaches to the “hormonal mare”.
We aim to work systematically to investigate any problem horse to get to the root cause.
Alistair has a strong interest in equine behaviour and combines this with clinical examinations to ensure a holistic approach to each case.
Before giving up on your horse, please contact one of our vets – we may just be able to help!
